Suggestions for new categories and genres
Hey, everybody!
One thing we’ve been talking about lately around Myxer is how hopelessly inadequate our existing “category” set is. The current set of 8 or so categories (mainly musical genres) was taken from Billboard’s ranking system back when we only had a couple hundred artists on the site. Now that we’ve got over 10,000, it’s become pretty apparent that it’s time to add more categories, and probably some sub-genres.
Our most popular category by far is “Hip-Hop / R&B”, so we were thinking we ought to create several categories under that genre to help people find what they’re looking for. But the fact that the “Other” category has more artists in it than “Pop / Rock” (the next most popular category) is another indicator that we’re missing out on some popular genres.
So what do you think? What new or different genres or sub-genres do you think we should add to the system? (You can see the existing list on the explore page). Please leave your suggests in the comments of this post, or just send them in to artist@myxertones.com if you’re really shy.

Yeah, Pop and Rock really don’t belong together at all, do they? We originally got this list from Billboard which, in retrospect, is a really silly way to get anything at all.
My biggest surprise: that there is so much interest in metal and related categories. I’ve also learned about the existence of various subgenres of Hip Hop that I didn’t even know existed! I think that tells a lot about how exciting the new music scene is these days.
We’re still listening and taking notes everyone, so expect to see some nice changes soon!

You probably knew this, but I just found out that Art Laboe is still doing a nightly radio show out of California. I knew that he was one of the pioneering DJs playing Rock on the radio back in the ’50s (holy CRAP that’s a log time ago…), but I didn’t know he was still active.
And, no, before you start any rumors, I wasn’t around in the ’50s to hear any of it…

And a section for those that are heavier than ‘rock’ but not exactly hardcore and/or metal (that is: screamo/emo/etc.)
I really wouldn’t look to “sub-genre” anything down to the line, though taking hardcore/metal out of ‘rock’ and giving them their own name is good. Same for the other genres. But to slice the ‘metal’ category into black metal, nu metal, death metal, grindcore, and so on, would be superfluous.
I personally would be very excited to see a Hardcore and Ska section made, though there would be relatively little entries in the latter.
Also, is there a way to search for, say, “Black My Heart” as an artist rather than as a whole which brings up artists and song names? Perhaps I overlooked this.

um i would have to say .. Reggae, Reggae and more Reggae .. im not from the caribbean but i love reggae and my daughter is jamaican by her father and i am getting really annoyed b/c i been listening to reggae since i was like 11 or 12 and every site i visit is very limited in reggae if they have that even! now reggae is divided into 2 parts, dancehall and roots and culture… Also .. another caribbean music genre u should add is soca .. just a thought b/c r&b n hiphop is too broad to put reggae under and like u said .. there are too many diff types of music on the other catagory … also … i got one of ur email newletters saying about getting ringtones directly from ur cell on the mxr.cc site .. um i am putting my cell# and password in and its sayin that it doesnt match records .. yet i can get on ur site thru the computer just fine … wat is going on?
Davida – Thanks for the comments about Reggae. We’ve been hearing that a lot, so I think it’s sure to have ‘made the cut’ for the new category lists.
With regard to accessing the website from your mobile phone: make sure you are entering your cell # and your PIN (which is NOT your password) when logging in to the mobile website. I think a “movie quotes” or a “soundtrack” category would be fun. I also think an “oldies” category would be neat. These categories are eclectic and will appeal to a variety of Myxer users.
jazz… alternative… uhhh kids(for younger users)…catagorize wallpaper too… like comdy, cute, cartoons, anime, XXX, brands (im just browsing through wallpapers and classifying what i see)

I completely agree that Pop and Rock should be separated. Can we also have categories for Punk, Heavy Metal, and Classic Rock as well?

I’d like to be able to get the song title and not the “artist” who put the songs in. Makes it hard to find something if you do not the “artist’. Maybe I am too old to search this way. But if I type in Bad Company I don’t want to get everything with the word Bad in it.
