Have A Phone-tastic Halloween!

It’s a boo-tiful day in the neighborhood! All the ghouls and boys at Myxer headquarters have joined farces for some pre-Halloween fun. While working on the beach tends to make every day officewear feel like casual Friday, today is more of a Freaky Friday as we were challenged to dress our Halloween best for the first annual MYXERween costume luncheon. As we sunk our fangs into some delicious pizza and werewolfed it down, bloody slice by bloody slice, we admired some some of the Myxer team’s creativity. From Bloody Ballerina’s to Bling Bearing Baldness to Infomerial Madness to Mad Rock Stars to BioHazards to a Living Myxer.com Website (and of course the requisite guy in a gorilla suit) we had costume clad employees to suit anyone’s Trick or Treat tastes.

You can help us pick this year’s King or Queen of Halloween by VOTING HERE.

Of course there is still plenty of time to treat yourself by tricking out your phone with some screaming scary stuff to horror-fy your handset. We have monstrous MP3′s, terrifying tones, wicked wallpapers, vicious videos and enough Halloween fun to scare your smartphone silly.

You can start ringing in your Halloween with this chilling Holla-ween beat. Consider it your MYXERween Treat from the Myxer Team!

Myxer Cracks The QR Code

It turns out Da Vinci isn’t the only one who can get a bunch of people worked up about a code. For many years now the Mobile Industry has been excited by the prospect of using barcodes to connect the real world with the virtual world. I know this firsthand as back in 1998/99 I was co-founder of a company called BarPoint.com, and our entire business was built around the concept of entering or scanning a barcode on your phone and instantly getting back product specific search results and comparison shopping information. Can you say “ahead of our time”?

That Was Then, This Is Now

Flash forward to 2010 and the age of the Smartphone. Thanks to the proliferation of cameras in every phone the idea of scanning a barcode from your phone is becoming more and more common. There are now a number of companies and apps cleverly and creatively using barcodes to extend and simplify the process of accessing mobile content and interacting with physical media to trigger actions on your phone. It gives a new meaning to “point and click!” One of the the barcode formats growing in popularity is the QR Code (or “Quick Response” Code), the funny looking box above and below that you are starting to see cropping up in more and more places, from billboards in Times Square, to the backs of business cards.

The QR MyxerCode

A QR code can include an embedded link, and the software that your cameraphone uses to read the code can launch your browser and take you right to that link with a single click. It is EASY and Myxer likes EASY, so we have now added a unique QR Code for virtually every item, Artist and Content Partner on Myxer – over 5 million unique QR Codes! If you are downloading content from Myxer.com you can simply point your scanning ready phone’s camera at the QR Code on any item or artist page and get the link right to the mobile download on your phone. If you have a smartphone you may need to first download a Barcode Scanning app, and if so you can find a few suggested free ones here.

Cut And Paste, Point And Click

If you are an artist or brand with content on Myxer, you can easily “right click” on the code and save your Myxer QR Code as an image you can use on your own site, or even in printed materials to make it easy for your fans to point and click to get right to all your content on Myxer. Even better, not only does every item on Myxer now have a QR Code, but every item and artist also already has a customizable SMS keyword (Text “YourName” to 69937) so between the SMS code and the QR code, any phone can easily get to your content from anywhere you place the codes and SMS instructions. Cool!

Try it now and get a free laugh from the the “Can You Hear Me Now” ringtone by scanning the code below, and if you don’t have a scanning phone just Text “joelhaas 499″ to 69937 or click here.

Ringtones So Easy A Caveman Could Do it…

I first met the GEICO Caveman at a party at SXSW in 2008.  I was immediately struck by his charm and good looks, as were many others at the party including Robert Scoble and Mashable’s Pete Cashmore (see the picture I took below).  Since that chance meeting with the Caveman, I have been very impressed by GEICO’s ability to manage three very distinct, equally entertaining and effective branding campaigns at the same time.  In addition to the readily recognizable Neanderthal, GEICO’s plucky Gecko and wide-eyed wad of MONEY are also fun, friendly and powerful bits of branding for the Insurance giant.

GEICO Gets It…

Clearly the GEICO team gets the value of entertaining marketing and has wisely leveraged all types of media from traditional TV ads toYouTubeFlickrFacebookTwitter and Mobile to share and spread the fun, never losing sight of the underlying message that GEICO can save you money on your insurance.  They have leveraged new media platforms for both entertainment and practical services as well.  For example the GEICO Glovebox iPhone app lets you do everything from manage your account to learn how to change a tire, to find a taxi or roadside service.  Smart marketing all around.

Ringa Da Ding Ding Dingy Dong…

You have probably seen the GEICO “ringtone” commercials (see below).  Since I work at Myxer I was thrilled to see such a clever use of ringtones in a national TV ad, and at the same time I wished we could have all of GEICO’s great mobile content available to the Myxer community.  Well, sometimes you get what you ask for, and I am very pleased to say that we have partnered with GEICO to offer some awesome (and free) ringtones and wallpapers for your phone.  You can guess which one I have already set as my default ringtone… it’sBOSS!

Ringing Outside The Box…

If you are reading this, you probably already know that MyxerTones offers a free service that enables anyone to create, share and even sell their own ringtones and wallpapers and deliver them to any phone… What you may not know is that we also have a lot of people getting very creative as to how they can use the Myxer platform and mobile content to market and promote themselves, their companies and their causes… and not only with music ringtones. We are constantly finding out about new and different ways Myxer is being used. We have discovered authors using ringtones to promote book releases, and everyone from State Fairs to Charities, and College Alumni Associations using ringtones and mobile wallpapers to promote their brands and events. Even popular marketing blogs like John Jantsch’s DUCT TAPE MARKETING have championed the concept of “ringtone branding” and using the power and proliferation of mobile phones to get your brand and marketing message in the hands (and pockets) of the mobile masses. Here are a few examples of clever and non-traditional ringtones we have found within the MyxerTones catalog:

  • Popular Podcaster and Sci-Fi/Horror Author Scott Sigler used a ringtone to promote the publication of his book ANCESTOR.
  • Ringtones are being used to promote the San Diego County Fair.
  • The State of Illinois Department of Commerce is using a ringtone to promote the State.

These are just a few examples of folks using Myxer to “ring outside the box.” If you create or come across other cool, creative, unusual or off the wall uses of MyxerTones, let us know!

A Mobile Cause…

Greetings MyxerToneheads! I am the “Biz Dev Guy” here and recently joined the company as employee number 13 (and yes, I consider that LUCKY!). I look forward to posting here periodically and giving you a little “Touch of Sass!” For the uninitiated, us corporate dudes use “Business Development” as a fancy way of saying “make partnerships” so my mission is to be the Johnny Appleseed of Myxerland and spread Myxer seeds all over the Internet so that Music and Content sites everywhere will use our Myxer Platform to enable their stuff to reach your mobile phone. With that in mind, if you have content sites you like and you want to see them “get Mobilized” so you can get their content on your phone, let us know who they are, and Johnny Myxerseed will give them a holler… and you will know that you have contributed to a Mobile cause!
