MidPoint Music Festival, Dewey Beach, Atlantis, & More!

The MidPoint Music Festival is winding up tonight in Cincinnati, and it’s great to report that there are tons of MyxerIndies all over the town! Myxer was the official ringtone provider for the festival, which explains why there are so many great free ringtones being given out — check out MidPoint’s Bands page to see the list of bands and get links to their stuff.

Several of us from Myxer have headed up there to hang out with our bands and rock out in the Midwest. Come to think of it, between the lingering “aftershocks” from Atlantis last week, and the draw of Dewey Beach which is also going on right now, the Myxer offices are just about vacant right now. Marsha? George? Steve? Where are you guys? I hope you remembered to wear underwear with your name and hotel address on it so that you can be returned by whoever finds you at the end of the night…

Speaking of Atlantis: I was in Atlanta for the party and had a great time. I met a lot of cool people, and really enjoyed the event and the city. Did I meet you there?

If you see us at any of these events, please stop by and say hi! We don’t get out of our cages very much, so we love to meet up with everybody at the shows. And if you’re going to a show or conference you think we ought to check out, by all means shout it out!

Site refresh and Facebook integration

Hey, everyone!

First of all, let me say it has been a great pleasure to speak with MySpace about the problems our users have had getting MyxerTags to work on their site. I’m happy to say that – Oh, wait! Silly me, I forgot! We couldn’t get anyone at NewsCorpSpace to answer a single email, phone call, or smoke signal. We got blown off without so much as a scripted email response from their “support” department, which is really annoying.

Introducing the Myxer Facebook Application…

So in completely unrelated news, we’ve been busy building deep integration with Facebook, and we’re happy to announce the general availability of the Myxer Facebook application. This thing’s pretty cool. It lets you link your Myxer account to your Facebook account so that, for example, you can share your favorite MyxerTones really easily with your Facebook friends.

You can also search and explore all MyxerTones content right from within Facebook, and there are lots of little bells and whistles scattered about. Check it out and let us know what you think!

Install the Myxer Facebook Application:

Oh, and you’ve probably also noticed that we’ve done a little refresh of the site’s colors and layout. One thing we’re trying to do is get pages to load faster to make browsing a better experience for people, and we took the opportunity to spruce up some of the interfaces. We’re still kinda figuring out how to best arrange some of our key pages, so bear with us if stuff seems a little out of place.

Hope all is well with you and yours.

Suggestions for new categories and genres

Hey, everybody!

One thing we’ve been talking about lately around Myxer is how hopelessly inadequate our existing “category” set is. The current set of 8 or so categories (mainly musical genres) was taken from Billboard’s ranking system back when we only had a couple hundred artists on the site. Now that we’ve got over 10,000, it’s become pretty apparent that it’s time to add more categories, and probably some sub-genres.

Our most popular category by far is “Hip-Hop / R&B”, so we were thinking we ought to create several categories under that genre to help people find what they’re looking for. But the fact that the “Other” category has more artists in it than “Pop / Rock” (the next most popular category) is another indicator that we’re missing out on some popular genres.

So what do you think? What new or different genres or sub-genres do you think we should add to the system? (You can see the existing list on the explore page). Please leave your suggests in the comments of this post, or just send them in to artist@myxertones.com if you’re really shy.

MySpace being, well, silly

Hey, everyone. We’ve started to see a few cases where people try to post MyxerTags on their MySpace profile, or in bulletins, and the links get garbled by MySpace such that they end up dropping people that click on them on the MySpace home page. Not very helpful when you’re trying to get ringtones!

I’m not sure whether they’re having “technical difficulties” over there, or if this is some kind of crazy scheme to extort money from us (ha ha! have you seen how much we’re (not) charging around here?), but I thought I’d make a note of it and ask anyone to let us know if you’re having problems integrating MyxerTones with MySpace.

Boy, I hope they’re not doing this on purpose, because there are plenty of other online social networks that I’m sure our million+ users would love to have MyxerTones endorse…

Verizon RAZR/KRZR (and more) fixed!

Hey, everyone. Just a quick note to make sure everyone’s aware that we’ve been diligently working the Verizon issue, and actually have some good news to report. Thanks to the work of a lot of our crew (and support from a lot of helpful MyxerTones users), we were finally able to “get through” to Verizon and help them fix up some of their infrastructure configuration problems.

Bill has updated a previous post with the current state of the Verizon world (as we know it), but I wanted to write a quick note to make sure everyone saw it. The best news is that the RAZR and KRZR (along with several other popular phones) are now working with the same good quality that they used to have before all this nonsense started.

Thanks to everyone for your patience as we worked to get these issues resolved. You wouldn’t believe how complicated this stuff can get! Oh, BTW, we know you poor Samsung Axxx users are still not too happy, and we haven’t given up on you.

Peace, Myk
