MyxerPix Beta

Hey! Just a quick note to say that we’re quietly adding support for wallpapers (images) to Myxer. If you’re a registered user on Cingular or T-Mobile, you’ll see a new “MyxerPix” section on your homepage at MyxerTones. Go ahead and upload any JPG, GIF, BMP, or PNG file you have on your computer, and we’ll let you send it to your mobile phone.

We’re going to continue to add features and functionality over the next couple of weeks to make everything really smooth, but we think things are working well enough right now to let our existing users try it out. So for now, while we work out all of the kinks, we’re not charging any credits for MyxerPix at all. Feel free to load up your phone with all the photos you have hoarded on your PC!

As always, please let us know if you have any questions or problems, or if you just want to say hi.

Better Support for Verizon Phones

Was the sound quality of the ringtone you downloaded to your Verizon phone not quite up to snuff? Worse yet, did you have trouble setting the song you downloaded from us as your ringtone at all?

If so, try resending the ringtone using a different ringtone format. Just sign-in and go to the My Account page, change the Preferred Ringtone Format, then go back to your homepage and resend your song from the Recent MyxerTones list.

If you find a format that works better for your phone, Please drop us a note to let us know so we can update our site. If you can’t find one that works, let us know that too.

Here’s what we have heard from some of our users so far:
LG 8000 – Try MP3
Motorola E815 – Try MP3
Motorola V26x – Try QCP
Motorola V276 – Try QCP
Motorola V710 – Try MP3
Samsung SCH-A950 – Try AAC

MyxerTag Builder for MySpace

Do you have a band with songs on MySpace? If so, check out our new MyxerTag Builder for MySpace. In makes it super easy to create and publish ringtones from any song you have posted in your profile.

Just enter your profile ID and we will display all of the “downloadable” songs available in your profile. Select any song from the list, give us some basic information (if you feel like it), and we will spit out some simple HTML (a MyxerTag) that you then add back onto your MySpace profile to make ringtones of your songs available to all of your fans.

Visit our buddies from Hal to see how a MyxerTags look and work out in the wild. After you open their profile, just scroll down and click on any of the tags available. You can preview the ringtone by clicking on the picture of the speaker and if you like it, send it to your phone by entering your phone number and clicking the “send to phone” button.

If you have any questions about how this works, visit our FAQ page. If you’re still have questions or just want to say ‘hi’, drop us a note and we’ll get back to you (really).

Verizon / Motorola V710 Woes

We receive a lot of notes from confused owners of the Motorola V710. They can’t seem to find the option to “save as ringtone” after they download song files from MyxerTones. I mean, this is a sweet phone, right? So it must be that these owners are just doing something wrong. Well, you might be surprised to know that the reason for this is: carrier greed.

The fact is that Verizon has intentionally disabled the ability to save downloaded songs as ringtones on the v710 in order to force people to pay money to them (Verizon) for their limited set of canned ringtones instead of being free to use whatever ringtone they want. This isn’t the only thing they’ve crippled on this phone, as documented in various sites. It’s apparently even been enough to start class action suits against Verizon (though I’m not sure of the status of those).

Now, there are some enterprising people out there that have figured out all sorts of wonderful hacks for “healing” these phones, but the fact is that most normal people (people that aren’t comfortable with serial cables and hex editors) are just not going to be able to use MyxerTones or similar services to get what they want onto their phone. If you’re one of the brave hackers, feel free to check out sites like Wireless Advisor and Nuclear Elephant for more technical info. If not, I’m sorry to say I don’t think we can support your V710 at the current time.

MyxerTags Beta

Today is a really exciting day for MyxerTones, because we’ve updated the web site with a beta version of MyxerTags, an awesome new tool for independent musicians and other content producers. In a nutshell, MyxerTags allows anyone that’s created original audio content to make that audio content available for use as a ringtone on mobile phones – for free!

Let me show a quick sample first so you can get a taste. The image below is a MyxerTag I created with the MyxerTag builder. I pointed the MyxerTag builder at an original music composition, and it generated the HTML behind this image.

[send as ringtone]

If you click on that link, you’ll go to the MyxerTones web site, and you’ll be able to download that ringtone to your phone immediately just by typing in your phone number. It’s really cool, because I didn’t even have to upload the song to the MyxerTones web site before building the link – all of that is taken care of behind the scenes by MyxerTones.

So what’s awesome is that all of these local and independent bands that just want to get their stuff heard by their fans can now distribute ringtones to their fans with hardly 3 minutes of work! Take any existing audio file you’ve created and put on the web (MP3, WMA, whatever), and use the MyxerTag link builder to build a tiny snippet of HTML to paste into your own web site. Voila! Anyone visiting your site is one click away from sending your song to their phone as a ringtone.

As I said, we’ve just released the beta to the web, so we’re going to continue to refine and polish, but the basics are all there. If you have original content you want to share for use as a mobile phone ringtone, please try it out and let us know how it works for you.
