Myxer’s BoomBox Internet Radio Report: Music Free For All!

Following our announcement of Myxer Social Radio, we released our latest Myxer BoomBox Report, this time focusing on Internet Radio.  As far as we can tell, video never did kill the radio star.  Instead, radio has gone digital in a big way and today you have more streaming music choices than ever before.  With the emergence of a number of services such as Spotify, iHeartradio, Pandora, Slacker, Rdio and others (including the upcoming Myxer Social Radio) ,we are perhaps witnessing the beginning of a golden age of Internet Radio.  With that in mind, for this edition of the Myxer BoomBox Report we surveyed 1,188 Myxer mobile users to better understand their views and behaviors when it comes to Internet radio.

Of the 1,188 mobile visitors to m.myxer.com surveyed, 36% responded that they regularly listen to more than one Internet radio service. Of that group, 26% said they listen regularly to 2-5 services, while 10% listen to more than 5 different Internet radio services on a regular basis.

When we asked what is the most important feature for an Internet radio service 63% chose free music as their response.  A whopping 78% said that they only listen to FREE services.

We also took a closer look at how social features mesh with Internet Radio:

Social interaction is becoming a more important part of the Internet radio experience and we dove in a little deeper to see what social features people want along with their listening.

  • 33% said they would like to dedicate or send songs to friends
  • 25% want to post what they are listening to to Facebook or Twitter
  • 19% want to listen to music with their friends
  • 10% want to chat with friends while listening

Delving a little deeper into chat as a social radio feature we found that the large majority, 78%, would chat with friends while listening if they could at least some of the time.

  • 45% said they would chat all of the time
  • 33% said they would chat sometimes
  • 11% said they would rarely chat
  • 11% said they would not chat at all

Myxer’s BoomBox mCommerce Report: Shop ‘Till Your Calls Drop

In the latest Myxer BoomBox Report, we decided to take a look at the fast growing Mobile Commerce industry and learn more about the mobile shopping habits of visitors to Myxer’s mobile website.  We surveyed 2,400 visitors to Myxer on their phones and found that 53% of them had made purchases from their phones, with 19% of them saying they made between 2 and 5 purchases a month…

Of the 2400 mobile visitors to m.myxer.com that we surveyed, 53% responded that they had made a purchase from their mobile phone.  The largest group, 19%, said they made between 2 and 5 purchases a month.  Surprisingly, 16% said that they make more than 10 purchases a month.  Taking a closer look at the 53% who said they did indeed make purchases from their phone, 31% said they preferred to have their mobile purchases charged to their mobile phone bill while 18% said they preferred to pay by credit card.  However, when broken down by age, younger mobile consumers clearly preferred paying on their phone bill.  In the 18-24 year old age range, 38% preferred charging their phone bill, while only 14% preferred paying by credit card. In the 35-54 age range, the credit card was the preferred method of payment at 28% versus 23% for paying by phone bill.   It is also interesting to note that within Android users who purchased, 27% preferred to use their credit card.

The BoomBox mCommerce report takes a closer look at what people are buying, how frequently they are buying and how much they are spending per purchase from their mobile phones, giving some interesting insights into emerging mCommerce trends.

Once someone jumps aboard the mCommerce train, it seems they are happy to shop from a variety of merchants.  40% of those who purchased bought from 2-4 vendors in the past month.  24% purchased from 5 or more vendors and 12% purchased from 10 or more vendors.  With this much activity we were interested to know what was driving mCommerce.  Convenience was the top response with 37% of the purchasers.  Price was second with 24% of the mobile shoppers.  A close third at 22% was those who shopped from their mobile because of the “cool factor.”  When looking at just Android users, “convenience” was the top reason for mobile shopping, with 45% of Android users citing it.
